    As an infectious disease is controlled and therefore of less concern, complacency can develop, paving the way for resurgence of the disease. The early success of the plan to eliminate tuberculosis in the United States by the year caused news reports, education, and research money to be diverted to more common diseases. To Graham and his followers the issue was not only health but moral living. His Lecture on Epidemic Diseases Generally and Particularly the Spasmodic Cholera () brought together some of his findings, which eventually led him to prescribe physical exercise, sensible clothing, continence, good sleeping habits, and vegetarianism.
