There have been already 2 Editions of this book, Edition 1 (), Edition 2 (). Both these editions are out of print, but there is still ongoing interest to the subjects addressed in this book. We have decided to make the new Edition (3) instead of just printing additional copies of the Edition 2 for the few reasons.   Scattering Theory The simplest model of a scattering experiment is given by solving Schrödinger’s equation for a plane wave impinging on a localized potential. A potential V(r) might represent what a fast electron encounters on striking an atom, or an alpha particle a nucleus.

2 Preface Our aim is to give an introduction to the spectral methods for the Schro¨dinger and Klein-Gordon equations with a potential, and their applications to dispersion time-d. This book discusses as well the function of quantum field theory in predicting S-matrix elements and cross sections that can be compared with experiments. The final chapter deals with strong interaction dynamics as well as introduces Regge poles and dispersion relations.

Dispersion of waves on water was studied by Pierre-Simon Laplace in The universality of the Kramers–Kronig relations (–27) became apparent with subsequent papers on the dispersion relation's connection to causality in the scattering theory of all types of waves and particles. Forced excitations and forced or spontaneous decays of energy levels are discussed as well as particle scattering. The structure of compound particles like proton or neutron may be revealed by scattering experiments at varying momentum transfer.

Decays, resonances and scattering The number of particles remaining at time tis governed by the decay law dN dt = −ΓN Which integrates to give N(t) = N 0 exp(−Γt). We can easily calculate the particles’ average proper lifetime τ, using the prob-ability that they decay between time tand t+δt p(t)δt= − 1 N 0 dN dt δt= Γexp(−Γt) δt.
